Remote Job Provides Woman With Flexibility, Balance

Woman Finds Flexibility, Balance, Thanks to Remote Job

When you’re fortunate enough to have an employer that is accommodating and allows flexible work, it feels like almost anything is possible with your career. But, sometimes, things change and suddenly.

Though Kate W. had stayed with her employer for years thanks to their flexibility in accommodating her medical condition, she still felt the pressure to get to the office every day. And when new management came on board, the flexibility she had come to rely on was gone.

Kate had often thought a remote job would be a better match for her needs but put off her search for several reasons. When everything changed seemingly overnight, though, Kate turned to FlexJobs to find the full-time remote job she had long dreamed of connecting with.

Everything Evaporated

Kate stayed with her employer for years because they were accommodating and flexible even though she thought a full-time remote job would be better for her situation. “I’ve struggled with health challenges over the last 10 years, and during that time, I had often thought that working from home would make those challenges more manageable.”

She was hesitant to pursue full-time remote work, though. “I didn’t pursue a full-time remote job for a long time because my employer had always been understanding and accommodating of my needs. Finding a full-time remote job seemed like a long shot because I didn’t know anyone who worked from home full-time, and the competition for jobs looked fierce.”

However, due to a change in management, her once flexible and accommodating job was no more, so she decided to search for remote work. “There were some management changes, and the flexibility I enjoyed evaporated almost overnight. I decided it was time to take the leap and see if I could find a position that would work better for me.”

Learning Some New Tricks First

Because it had been “a while” since she had looked for a job, Kate took advantage of everything her FlexJobs membership offered. She found “quality remote jobs” with ease and used her member dashboard to keep track of her applications.

She also met with a FlexJobs Career Coach for tips on how to search for a remote job and how to create a resume that would get an interview. “The career coach had great advice. Her tips on how to refine my resume and adjust the language to get through today’s screening processes was very helpful.”

Kate also customized her cover letter and tailored her resume for each application she submitted. Though she admits it was time-consuming, she also said it was an effective technique and worth the effort. “I think that’s what it takes to be seen when there are a lot of candidates for each job.”

Relief While Adding Value

Thanks to the advice from her Career Coach, the personalized approach to applying for positions, and a few other tweaks, Kate found a full-time 100% remote job with Aptive Resources as an Associate. She says that working from home has changed the way she thinks about where she works and what her career path can be.

One of the hardest parts of working in an office was getting to the office, especially when her asthma flares up. “I’ve always been able to do my work even when I’m having asthma flares. The difficult part was getting out the door and into the office.”

When you work from home, you never have to worry about a commute, no matter how you’re feeling. But, when you’re not feeling well, the ability to stay home and work is priceless. “I feel such a sense of relief that I can get my work done from where I need to,” Kate says.

Remote work also lets her take care of sick family members without using up a sick day herself. “It’s very helpful to be home with my son when he is sick or has a day off from school (or, the weeks that school was closed due to coronavirus).”

And, remote work has opened a career path that Kate might not have had available to her because of where she lives. “Now my career options aren’t limited by geography. I live in a very rural area with few employers in my field.”

But perhaps the biggest thing that Kate has found is that she can contribute to an organization in spite of her chronic illness. And, she knows that those contributions have value. “Even though I have a chronic disease, I know that I can still add a lot of value to an organization. I am grateful for the chance to connect with employers who don’t put so much emphasis on your physical presence in the office, value their employees and their differences, and encourage a healthy work-life balance.”

Feel Liberated With a Flexible Job

For Kate, remote work has given her so much more than a job. “It’s very liberating to know that there are remote jobs out there and that landing one is not as much of a long shot as I previously thought,” Kate says of finding remote work. She’s also discovered that “I love the work-from-home life. I’m not sure that I ever want to go back to an office job!

No matter where you live or what you do, remote work can help liberate your career, connect you with an employer that values your work, and help you find the work-life balance you want, no matter what it looks like.
