Quick and Healthy Work-From-Home Meals
Whether you’re working from home due to the covid-19 pandemic, or you’re a seasoned remote worker, meals are an important part of your day.
While at your office you may have frequented local cafes or company cafeterias for breakfast, lunch, and snacks, at home you must fit cooking and fueling yourself—and possibly also feeding other family members home from school and work at the same time—into your daily work schedule. Similarly, if you’re accustomed to working from home, some of your go-to spots may be temporarily closed.
The good news is that your work-from-home meals don’t have to become a drag. A matter of fact, you actually have more opportunities to eat well since you have a kitchen at your disposal.
If you’re wondering what to eat when working from home, we’ve compiled some ideas from top nutritionists and dietary experts on how to make mealtime less of a full-time job while keeping your choices nutritious and promoting optimum health. By no means comprehensive, this list should be used as a starting a point to boosting your nutritional intake while working from home.
Healthy Work-from-Home Meals
Registered dietician and nutritionist Jenna Gorham offers a plethora of recipes and resources on her website that will fill up remote workers who can’t spend a lot of time in the kitchen:
- Simple Banana Pancakes—Breakfast can be the most important meal to get your workday off to a good start from your home office. Gorham works from home herself and calls these pancakes her “Wednesday morning go-tos”—perfect for those who “don’t like wasting time spending too long making big breakfasts.” She describes them as a great source of protein and fiber that will keep you full and satisfied throughout the morning. (She suggests topping them with peanut butter.)
- Toast—7 Ways—Another quick and easy way to start your work-from-home day off right, with something sure to please every picky palate with more exciting options than the usual suspects of butter and jam.
The American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics offers recipes on its website that will healthfully fuel work-from-homers. Try this lunchtime favorite when you’re in a hurry but still want something good:
- Vegetable and Stars Soup Recipe—From registered dietician Alexandra Caspero, this quick meal combines tomato juice, low-sodium broth, frozen veggies, and stellini pasta for 250 calories of healthy comfort.
Cara Clark, owner and primary certified nutritionist of Cara Clark Nutrition, offers a number of recipes on her blog that represent her “‘non-dieting’ approach [that] has helped clients manage weight, energy, performance, diabetes, thyroid related disease, allergies, eating disorders and more.”
Some of Clark’s creations that are smart, easy, and healthy choices for work-from-home meals include:
- Cinnamon Apple Oat Smoothie—Banana, apple, baby spinach, and rolled oats make up the key ingredients in this satisfying drink and snack.
Lemon Coconut Energy Bites—A delicious powerhouse featuring dates and cashews that will keep you going when you need some extra oomph. The recipe makes 28-30 bites, and you can store them in the fridge or freezer to eat during the week.
- Hummus Deviled Eggs—Super simple recipe that can get you through breakfast and/or lunch without much more work than boiling eggs and mixing a few other tasty ingredients with hummus.
- Ginger Pineapple Chicken—The perfect healthy lunch or light dinner choice, with a minimum of preparation time and just a handful of wholesome ingredients (primarily chicken, brown rice, and seasonings).
- One Pan Wonder Taco Bowls—The guilt-free version of a taco bowl, which Clark bills as “a quick and easy dinner recipe that you can throw together in the time it would take you to get in the car, drive, and pick up take out.” Works well for a lunch, too.

Just because you’re working from home doesn’t mean your meal choices need to suffer. With just a little extra prep time, you can still eat quality foods that rival or surpass what you get from your favorite breakfast or lunch options.
