Best—and Worst—Colors to Wear to a Job Interview


You’re already nervous enough about your upcoming job interview, but having to pick out an outfit that conveys your professionalism and desire to land the position can certainly add extra stress. But did you know that even if you choose your most professional outfit, your color choice could kill your chances of getting the job? It turns out there are certain dos and don’ts when it comes to what colors to wear to a job interview.

In a recent CareerBuilder survey, the topic of color choices and how they impact a job seeker’s chance of impressing a potential boss was explored. Almost 2,100 human resource managers and hiring professional participated in the survey to determine which colors can greatly impact an interview. Turns out, orange is not the new black, as 25 percent of employers listed it as the worst color to wear during a job interview. That said, orange (as well as green, yellow, and purple) are all considered to be colors that are associated with creativity.

So which are the colors to wear to impress a prospective boss—and land the job? Well, blue still reigns supreme as the color choice to impress an employer (23 percent), and it’s associated with being a true team player. The second most popular color choice was black (15 percent), which connotes a sense of leadership and strength. And while it’s a bold color choice, red symbolizes power.

And if you want to stray from the traditional black or blue interview suits, there are other color options that are still professional—and likeable. For example, white symbolizes someone who is organized, brown conveys a sense of dependability, and gray is often attributed to characteristics such as being logical and analytical.

The next time you’re getting ready for a meeting with a potential employer, be sure to pick out an interview outfit that conveys your desire for the job through style—and color.
