4 Types of Work Schedules on FlexJobs
While all of the jobs in the FlexJobs database are remote or flexible positions, they have a wide variety of different work schedules available. From full-time, long-term to part-time, flexible—and every possible combination in between—there truly is a work schedule that fits every job seeker’s need.
But how do you figure out what schedule is best for you as you search for your perfect job? The first step is understanding all the types of work schedules listed on FlexJobs, and what each one means in terms of hours, duration, and flexibility.
To help you find your ideal position, we’re listing out and defining the four different types of work schedules in the FlexJobs database.
4 Work Schedules for Remote and Flexible Jobs
As you search for remote and flexible jobs, you’ll notice that many of the work schedule categories can be mixed and matched. See the explanations below to find out which combo works best for you!
Although full-time work is traditionally considered to be 40 or more hours per week, the definition can vary by employer and even by governmental organization. For example, the IRS defines full-time employees as those who work 30 or more average hours per week, while the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) defines full-time at 35 hours and above. Full-time jobs are the most likely to provide perks and benefits, like health insurance and retirement benefits.
At FlexJobs, positions that are 35 or more hours per week, or are classified as full-time by the employer, are listed as “Full-Time” in the job posting. Keep in mind that the full-time designation doesn’t determine which hours you have to work. Full-time hours can include weekend, evening, and other hours, as determined by the employer.
Jobs classified as part-time in the FlexJobs database are any positions with hours less than full-time, so anything from 34 hours and below—or if the employer labels the position as part-time. Similar to full-time hours, jobs marked as “Part-Time” can include any hours, day or night.
While part-time hours may be more flexible and can be a great way to earn supplemental income or explore a new career path, jobs with this work schedule generally aren’t eligible for the same benefits as those with full-time hours.
Flexible schedule jobs on FlexJobs can be either part-time or full-time, so long as the worker is able to, for the most part, pick and choose their hours. These types of schedules give you more control over your start times and end times. You are also able to move your hours around to meet the demands of life.
For some, one of the big pros of flexible schedules is that you can work some hours early in the morning, then a few in the afternoon, some more late at night, and finish out the rest of the scheduled hours on the weekend. For others, it may mean a split shift schedule, where you split your hours throughout the day to allow time for family and other responsibilities.
All in all, a flexible schedule is one of the most sought-after work schedules for job seekers on FlexJobs.
An alternative schedule is one in which work hours are outside of the typical Monday-Friday, 9-5. Second shifts and night shifts would qualify, as would weekend hours. These types of schedules free up the normal daytime business hours for other jobs, school, or non-work obligations.
Alternative schedules are ideal for people who just can’t work during normal business hours. Whether it’s to help with juggling care for children or other family members, bringing in supplemental income, or working around other schedules, many people seek alternative schedule jobs for the ability to fit in work with the different areas of their lives.
